A word about website security
I remember back in the day when I first presented a local law enforcement agent my log files and told them where to pick up the bad guy for a failed hack attempt on one of my servers from some bored individual in Illinois. Ever see the deer-in-the-headlight look? Well, I did that day. Although I had bullet proof evidence and tracked the guy to his apartment. All that happened was my police department called his police department and told the guy to "cut it out"!
Well things have changed considerably since then on both sides of the fence. As hackers get better tools, those of us who admin security get better tools. Makes me wonder if they are made by the same people sometimes. With today's technology, we can pin point any hack attempt on the fly and have the police knocking on their door literally within minutes.
Such is the case of the hacker from the Netherlands. This guy was good. He tried everything to get into our servers. And as the first red flag came up, we were tracking his every move. While he was still trying to get in we were able to track down his residence. Contact the authorities. E-Mail them the log files. And arrest him within 35 minutes.
Although getting police response in under an hour is rare. It can be done. As a matter of fact, an address can be obtained for any online user within a few minutes. Seconds in most cases. For those who bounce their signal or use proxys, it takes a bit longer. But not much longer. The proxys keep records at the ready. Well... because people normally don't need proxys unless they are being blocked from something at their own IP address or the more common reason, to engage in illegal activities online. It takes them less time to give out the information than a regular ISP generally speaking because they are ready for it. Everything online has a paper trail.
Needless to say, it's much easier now to toss hackers in jail than it once was. And much quicker too.
